Erected annually by the Church of St. Anthony of Padua at 154 Sullivan Street and Houston street, here looking south from West Houston street. The Roman Catholic Shrine church was built in 1866. It is staffed by the Franciscan Friars and is the oldest existing parish founded for ministry to Italian immigrants in the United States.

A nativity scene or crèche also known as a manger scene, or crib is the special exhibition, particularly during the Christmas season, of art objects representing the scene of the birth of Jesus.

St. Francis of Assisi is credited with creating the first nativity scene in 1223 at Greccio, Italy, in an attempt to place the emphasis of Christmas upon the worship of Christ rather than upon secular materialism and gift giving.

The Nativity of Jesus has been a major subject of Christian art since the 4th century. The artistic depictions of the Nativity or birth of Jesus, celebrated at Christmas, are based on the narratives in the Bible, in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.
