When Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) and Calvert Vaux (1824-1895) created their design for Central Park in 1858, they transformed the low-lying swamplands into pastoral water bodies. The Pond, a 3.8-acre lake, was placed on the site of steep rock outcrops and a natural brook that came from the west side of Manhattan Island and emptied into the East River. In Olmsted and Vaux’s original plan, the area around the Pond was carefully designed to take the visitor through ever-changing scenery.

Allegory of Bad Government by Ambrogio Lorenzetti

Allegory of Bad Government painted by Ambrogio Lorenzetti from around February 26, 1338 to May 29, 1339.

Lorenzetti’s The Effects of Bad Government fresco. When the viewer examines this mural, we are confronted with a figure adorned with horns and fangs, and appearing to be cross-eyed. This figure is identified as TYRAMMIDES or Tyranny. He sits enthroned, resting his feet upon a goat, symbolic of luxury, and in his hand he holds a dagger.

Below the tyrant the captive figure of Justice lays bound, while the figures of Cruelty, Deceit, Fraud, Fury, Division, and War flank him, and above him float the figures of Avarice, Pride, and Vainglory. These figures, according to an advice book for city magistrates of the time, were considered to be the “leading enemies of human life”.

The planets of Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars preside over this scene, as they were the less favorable planets; also included are tyrannical figures such as the Roman Emperor Nero. When we look at the scene of the city its self, it appears to be very jarring; nothing fits as it should be. This is in part to the fact that Lorenzetti presented the scene in such a manner that the viewer must read it right to left, creating a sense of discomfort. When we look at the scene, we see that the city is in ruin, windows are wide open, houses are being demolished, and businesses are nonexistent, except that of the armourer. The streets are deserted, and the country side shows two armies advancing towards each other.

Leiv Eiriksson discovers America

The Voyage of Leif Ericson. The island of Iceland was settled by the Northmen at an early day. From Iceland these Norsemen made their way to Greenland, and established a few settlements in that frozen country. In about the year 1000, Leif Ericson, a native of Iceland, sailed from Greenland with thirty-five men in search of a land which a fellow-country man, Bjarni claimed to have seen from his ship some years before.

Sailing to the southwest, Ericson came in sight of the bleak shores of Labrador. He coasted toward the south, probably as far as Massachusetts. Finding the climate mild and the country inviting, he landed and spent the winter. From * the quantity of grapes which he found, he named the country Vinland.

Diana Nyad Swim for Relief

Long-distance swim legend Diana Nyad's 48-hour continuous "Swim for Relief” in New York City’s Herald Square from Oct. 8 – 10, 2013 in support of Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts. The swim will raise funds for AmeriCares, a nonprofit global health and disaster relief organization that delivers medicines, medical supplies and aid to people in need around the world and across the United States. P&G brands such as Duracell, Tide and Secret are underwriting all production costs for the Nyad Swim for Relief, maximizing the funds donated that directly support AmeriCares Sandy-related recovery activities.

A 120-foot long, two lane pool will be installed in Herald Square for the event, allowing New Yorkers to witness Diana’s endurance firsthand and cheer her on as she raises funds for those in need. Celebrities, community leaders, local organizations and everyday New Yorkers are invited to swim alongside Diana. Those in and outside of New York can also participate by directly donating funds, or starting their own fundraising efforts, at www.NyadSwimforRelief.com, in addition to offering words of encouragement through social media by using the #SwimForRelief hash tag. Submitted tweets and posts will be featured onsite at the event and shared with Diana as she swims toward her goal.
