Ships and Boats, Patrol Craft Fast "Swift Boat"

"Swift Boat" - PCF-71. The swifts patrolled the coast and estuaries generally. Some went fairly far up the rivers. High superstructure and lack of armor made them prime targets.

The Brown Water Navy in Vietnam consisted mainly three major task forces. Within these groups were many and varied river craft used to control the main waterways of Vietnam. Some boats were taken "right off the shelf" and modified for use in Vietnam while some were designed from the keel up specifically for use in this hostile environment. Modifications and improvements to these craft were made from suggestions offered by the sailors who lived and died on the rivers of Vietnam.

Ships and Boats, The "Clermont"

The Clermont Steamboat Robert Fulton. Public Domain ClipArt Stock Photos and Images Robert Fulton North River Steamboat The misnomer Clermont first appeared in Cadwallader D. Colden's biography of Fulton, published in 1817, two years after Fulton died. Since Colden was a friend of both Fulton and Livingston, his book was considered an authoritative source, and his errors were perpetuated in later accounts up to the present day. The vessel is now nearly always referred to as Clermont, but no contemporary account called her by that name.[

Often credited with inventing the steamboat, Robert Fulton was actually the man who put the design into practice. As a young man, Fulton dreamed of becoming a painter and went to Paris to study. Robert Fulton

Fulton's experiments began while he was in Paris, and may have been stimulated by his acquaintance with Chancellor Livingston, who held the monopoly, offered by the legislature of the State of New York, for the navigation of the Hudson River, to be accorded to the beneficiary when he should make a successful voyage by steam. SUMMARY: Photographs show news photos of S.S. LUSITANIA arriving in New York City on her maiden voyage, Sept. 13, 1907, and subsequent arrivals between 1908 and 1914; survivors of her sinking, May 1915; carrying flag-draped body of victim; removing crated body of victim from rescue ship.

Along with the Mauretania, Lusitania was built in response to the new, faster German steamers. The British Government heavily subsidized the construction of the vessels, having them built to Admiralty specs, for easy conversion to armed merchant cruisers in the event of war.
