Thanksgiving Turkey 3 (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris)

Thanksgiving Turkey 3 (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris)Title: Eastern Wild Turkey, Alternative Title: (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris), Creator: Stolz, Gary M., Source: WO8479-002, Publisher: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Contributor: DIVISION OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS.
Language: EN - ENGLISH, Rights: (public domain), Audience: (general), Subject: Animals, Birds, Louisiana, Wildlife.

Like other birds of the family Phasianidae, eastern wild turkeys are equipped with long, thick legs, large toes for walking and scratching, and a relatively short bill. Wild turkeys are unmistakable in their appearance. Males have dark iridescent plumage, bare heads and necks with blue and pink streaks, fan-shaped tails tipped with chestnut, and black-barred flight feathers.

Male turkeys (gobblers) also have spurs and a "beard," a tuft of thick, hair-like feathers that protrude out of the animal's breast. Female turkeys look much like their counterparts but lack the spurs, and most do not have a "beard." The eastern wild turkey is North America's largest gamebird. Adults weigh between 5.5-11 kilograms (12-25 pounds) and can reach a length of 91 cm (36 inches) for females to 122 cm (48 inches) for males. Wild turkeys differ from domestic turkeys in that they are less stocky and the head is more tinged with blue.

Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November. The holiday dates back to 1621, the year after the Puritans arrived in Massachusetts, determined to practice their dissenting religion without interference.

After a rough winter, in which about half of them died, they turned for help to neighboring Indians, who taught them how to plant corn and other crops. The next fall's bountiful harvest inspired the Pilgrims to give thanks by holding a feast.

The Thanksgiving feast became a national tradition -- not only because so many other Americans have found prosperity but also because the Pilgrims' sacrifices for their freedom still captivate the imagination.

To this day, Thanksgiving dinner almost always includes some of the foods served at the first feast: roast turkey, cranberry sauce, potatoes, pumpkin pie. Before the meal begins, families or friends usually pause to give thanks for their blessings, including the joy of being united for the occasion. SOURCE: usembassy.state.gov/

Halloween Cave

NPS Photo by Peter JonesCarlsbad Caverns National Park was established to preserve Carlsbad Cavern and numerous other caves within the Guadalupe Mountains—a Permian-age fossil reef. The park contains over 100 known caves, including the famous Lechuguilla Cave. Carlsbad Cavern, with one of the world's largest underground chambers and countless formations, is accessible via walking tours offered year-round. Established first as a National Monument on October 25, 1923, the park was designated a National Park on May 14, 1930.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park became a World Heritage Site on December 6, 1995.

The park contains a total of 46,766.45 acres; 33,125 acres are a designated wilderness area. Park use is highest in the months of June, July, and August, and generally on weekends and holidays. January is the least busy month. From 1991 to 2001, total annual visitation ranged from 688,742 (1992) to 455,617 (2001). The backcountry of the park gets little use.

Halloween Bat

Test Your Batting Average Test Your Batting Average, What do you know about bats? Bats are shy creatures and want to avoid you as much as you might want to avoid them. Did you know? Bats are the only mammals that can fly. Bats are NOT flying mice. Bats belong to a separate order of mammals called Chiroptera.
Bats come in all different colors, shapes and varieties. Some are red, have huge ears, or have very unusual faces. Many of these attributes are related to their navigational system.

One quarter of all mammal species are bats. Worldwide there are almost a thousand species of bats! In the US alone there are 39 species of bats.

In some parts of the world, bats take the place of bees in pollinating plants. Little brown bats have life spans that may exceed 32 years.

A bat will eat half it weight in insects in a single night.

In the 1930s scientists discovered that bats use a kind of natural sonar that allows them to "see" with their ears. This amazing system is called echolocation. Most sounds that a bat uses can not be heard by humans. A bat knows where an insect is because the sounds bounce off of it and return to the bat's ears. A bat can hear the footsteps of a walking insect! Most bats send signals through their mouths, others use their noses. Not all bats use echolocation. Fruit bats use sight and smell to locate their food.

All bats can see. Bats can use echolocation even when there are distracting noises. Hundreds of bats can fly out of a cave within range of one another's sound.

The Chinese view bats as symbols of good luck and happiness. They symbolize health, long life, prosperity, love of virtue and natural death.

A colony of big brown bats can eat 18 million cucumber beetles. Plants such as bananas, mangoes, cashews, dates and figs rely on bats for pollination and seed dispersal. Tequila is produced from agave plants. Seed production drops to 1/3000 of normal without bat pollinators. Nectar-feeding bats are primary pollinators of giant cacti such as the organ pipe and saguaro. Bat droppings (guano) support entire ecosystems of unique organisms, including bacteria useful in detoxifying wastes, improving detergents and producing gasohol and antibiotics.
