Purple Lilac - State Flower of New Hampshire

It was introduced to England some 300 years ago where it became a garden favorite. New Hampshire historian Leon Anderson writes in To This Day that the purple lilac was first imported from England and planted at the Portsmouth home of Governor Benning Wentworth in 1750. The Purple Lilac (Syringa vulgaris)was named the state flower of New Hampshire in 1919. The "common lilac" in native to eastern Europe. While it will grow in common soil it prefers rich soil and full sun.
