Portrait of an African Man
Artist: Jan Mostaert (circa 1475-1552/1553) Title: Portrait of an African man. Date: circa 1525-1530 Medium: oil on oak panel. Dimensions: Height: 30.8 cm (12.1 in). Width: 21.2 cm (8.3 in). Current location: Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 100 years or less.
Portrait of an African Man is a painting by the Netherlandish Renaissance painter Jan Mostaert from between c. 1520 and 1530. The exact subject of the painting has long been unclear.
Suggestions include that the subject is Christophle le More (Christopher the Moor), a black archer at the court of Emperor Charles V, or Saint Maurice, who was typically portrayed as black. If it is a portrait of a specific real individual, it appears to be the earliest known portrait of a black man in European painting
