OUR FOREIGNERS CHAPTER I OPENING THE DOUR

Long before men awoke to the vision of America, the Old World was the scene of many stupendous migrations. One after another, the Goths, the Huns, the Saracens, the Turks, and the Tatars, by the sheer tidal force of their numbers threatened to engulf the ancient and medieval civilization of Europe. But neither in the motives prompting them nor in the effect they produced, nor yet in the magnitude of their numbers, will such migrations bear comparison with the great exodus of European peoples which in the course of three centuries has made the United States of America.

That movement of races — first across the sea and then across the land to yet another sea, which set in with the English occupation of Virginia in 1607 and which has continued from that day to this an almost ceaseless stream of millions of human beings seeking in the New World what was denied them in the Old — has no parallel in history.

The Goose that laid the Golden EggThe Goose that laid the Golden Egg: Wonder-world: a collection of fairy tales, tr. from the Fr., Germ., and Danish: a collection of fairy tales, tr. from the Fr., Germ., and Danish. By Wonder-world Published by , 1875 Original from Oxford University. Digitized Jul 24, 2006
A poor woman was gathering fuel—fallen branches; she bore them upon her back, and carried her little child at her breast, and was now on her way home. She saw the golden swan, the Swan of Good Fortune, spring up from the rushy banks. What was that gleaming there ? A golden egg - it was still warm. She laid it in her bosom, and the warmth remained ; there was certainly life in the egg. Yes, there was a pecking inside the shell; she heard it; and thought it was her own heart that was beating.

EXPLANATORY. In this book a number of dialects are used, to wit: the Missouri negro dialect; the extremest form of the backwoods South-Western dialect; the ordinary " Pike-County " dialect; and four modified varieties of this last. The shadings have not been done in a hap-hazard fashion, or by guess-work; but pains-takingly, and with the trustworthy guidance and support of personal familiarity with these several forms of speech.

Lockheed P-38 Lightning

Lockheed P-38 LightningAir Force Link is provided as a public service by the Office of the Secretary of Air Force (Public Affairs).

Information presented on Air Force Link is considered public information and may be distributed or copied.
Use of appropriate byline/photo/image credits is requested.

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was designed in 1937 as a high-altitude interceptor. The first one built, the XP-38, made its public debut on Feb. 11, 1939 by flying from California to New York in seven hours.

Because of its unorthodox design, the aircraft evolved for several years before becoming the fighter destined to see combat in all theaters of World War II. The P-38 Lightning introduced a new dimension to American fighters - a second engine. The multi-engine configuration reduced the Lightning loss-rate to anti-aircraft gunfire during ground attack missions.

Late in 1942, it went into large-scale operations during the North African campaign where the German Luftwaffe named it "Der Gabelschwanz Teufel"--"The Forked-Tail Devil."

Equipped with droppable fuel tanks under its wings, the P-38 was used extensively as a long-range escort fighter. A very versatile aircraft, the Lightning was also used for dive bombing, level bombing, ground strafing and photo reconnaissance missions.

As with any long-term production aircraft, the P-38 underwent many modifications. The fastest of the modifications was the P-38J with a top speed of 420 mph, and the version produced in the greatest quantity was the "L," of which 3,735 were built by Lockheed and 113 by Vultee. The P-38J intakes under the engines were enlarged to house core-type intercoolers. The curved windscreen was replaced by a flat panel, and the boom mounted radiators were enlarged. Some were fitted with bombardier type noses, and were used to lead formations of bomb-laden P-38s to their targets. The P-38M was a two-seat radar-equipped night fighter, a few of which had become operational before the war ended.

By the end of production in 1945, 9,923 P-38s had been built. Only 27 of the aircraft exist today.

Times Square Valentine's Heart

Times Square Valentine's HeartTimes Square Valentine's Heart, large 8 foot tall modern art heart decorates Duffy Square, which is the northern triangle of Times Square in New York City.
It is located between 45th and 47th Streets, Broadway and Seventh Avenue. It is a popular tourist destination and is well known for housing TKTS (seen in background), a destination point for those in search of reduced-price theater tickets.

The Times Square Alliance commissioned Gage/Clemenceau Architects to create a new work of art for Times Square that celebrates the uniqueness of its home. While the design of the heart is the work of Gage/ Clemenceau Architects, the production involved one hot-rod car design company, several robotic metal-cutting robots, an Ivy League University, a concert lighting expert , a graphic designer, a copywriter, a sculptor, and over 350 square feet of a material typically used for kitchen countertops.

Mary Queen of Scots

Mary, Queen of ScotsThe National Portrait Gallery portrait is inscribed Maria D. G. SCOTLE PIISSIMA REGINA FRANCIS DOTARIA ANNO ^ETATIS REGNIQ 36 ANGLIC^E CAPTIVIT IO S H 1578,
The National Portrait Gallery portrait by P.Oudry is painted on four stout oak panels, one of which bears the brand of Charles I., the C.R. with the arched crown. It cannot be identified with certainty in the catalogue of Charles I.'s collection, compiled by Van der Doort in 1637, but may have been acquired by the King between that date and the commencement of the Civil War.

It reappeared in the possession of the well-known family of Brocas at Beaurepaire, in Hampshire, whence it was purchased by the Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery in June 1876. Unfortunately it has suffered terribly from the hands of one or more unskilful or ignorant restorers.
