Ships and Boats RMS Titanic sea trials

Titanic beginning a day of sea trials, April 2, 1912. (NARA, RG 306, Records of the U.S. Information Agency)

"Not even God himself could sink this ship."
--Employee of the White Star Line, at the launch of the Titanic, May 31, 1911

From U.S. National Archives and Records Administration: The vast majority of the digital images in the Archival Research Catalog (ARC) are in the public domain. Therefore, no written permission is required to use them. We would appreciate your crediting the National Archives and Records Administration as the original source. Publication of Photographs Furnished by Still Pictures, It is important to note that all of the digital images that are available on our website (THIS IMAGE) are in the public domain.

When the British ship Titanic steamed out of Southampton bound for New York on April 10, 1912, it was the largest and most sumptuous luxury liner that had ever sailed. It was a monument to the promise of technology and to Victorian elegance, with magnificent oriental carpets and crystal chandeliers. It was thought to be unsinkable.

 RMS Titanic

Confidence was so high that the owners and builders rejected plans calling for as many as 64 lifeboats. Although the number of lifeboats on the Titanic (20) exceeded government standards, the boats would only accommodate about half of the 2,228 people aboard. In one of history's great ironies, the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage, after colliding with an iceberg off the banks of Newfoundland. More than 1,500 people died in the accident.

RMS Titanic departing Southampton on April 10, 1912. Author: F.G.O. Stuart (1843-1923)

This image (or other media file) is in the public domain because it's copyright has expired. This image is also in the public domain in countries that figure copyright from the date of death of the artist (post mortem auctoris, in this case F.G.O. Stuart (1843-1923) and that most commonly runs for a period of 50 to 70 years from the last day of that year.

The Online Library is the Photographic Section's readily accessible index to Naval and maritime history pictures.

Each entry provides a thumbnail image, a caption and the appropriate credit line. "Click" on the thumbnail to access a larger (average 50KB to 150KB) 96 dpi digital image that can usually be printed on letter-size paper.

To the best of our knowledge, all Online Library pictures are in the public domain and can therefore be freely downloaded and used for any purpose without requesting permission.

USS Missouri (BB-63) in 1950-55, During these years, Missouri was part of the Atlantic Fleet. However, she made two Korean War combat tours, one in 1950-51 and another in 1952-53, serving as Seventh Fleet flagship on both occasions and providing major caliber gunfire support to United Nations forces. She was also employed as a training ship for Naval Academy Midshipmen, carrying them on a number of visits to European ports.

In August 1954, Missouri was transferred to the Pacific Coast to be inactivated. She decommissioned on 26 February 1955 at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Washington, where she remained in reserve for the next three decades.

Election Day (United States), From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Election Day in the United States is the day when polls most often open for the election of certain public officials. Election Day occurs on the Tuesday following the first Monday of November every year, which is always the Tuesday between November 2 and November 8, inclusively.

This rule was instituted by the U.S. Congress in 1845, and the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November was chosen to keep the election day from falling on November 1, All Saints' Day, a Holy Day of Obligation for Roman Catholics. Tuesday was chosen to allow voters one day to travel to their polling place, as most residents at the time could not travel on Sunday because of church. The month of November was chosen because it was after the crops were harvested.

Science and Technology, Magnesium Oxide Dice

Source: National Institute of Standards and Technology, Credit Line as it should appear in print: Image credit: J.H. Scott, J. Bonevich/NIST.Chemical Analysis; Magnesium Oxide Dice, NIST scientists are developing new three-dimensional chemical imaging methods. Using a scanning transmission electron microscope, a tilting stage, and sensitive detectors,
NIST researchers can construct images that reveal both the chemical components and the complex shapes of crystal structures. This image shows cubes of magnesium oxide. Nanoscale particles of gold were deposited on the crystal faces to help define the surface topography.

Science and Technology, Transistors

Source: National Institute of Standards and Technology, Credit Line as it should appear in print: Credit: NTT/NIST.New Design for Transistors Powered by Single Electrons, The colorized images show how tuning the voltage of the three gates controls very small amounts of electrical charge and regulates current flow in the new silicon transistor.
In the first figure, the pattern of diagonal lines indicates the charge is correlated throughout the device, and current is flowing (at levels ranging from 0 Amps shown in red, to 1.4 nanoAmps shown in violet). The next three figures show what happens as the voltage applied to the center gate is reduced. In the last figure, the square pattern indicates the charge has separated in the device, and the large amount of white space indicates a related drop off in the current.

Science and Technology, nanoscale organic molecules

Caption: NIST researchers made the first confirmed 'spintronic' device incorporating organic molecules using a nanoscale pore test structure, which consisted of self-assembled molecules (shown in white within the middle blue layer in the illustration) sandwiched between nickel and cobalt electrodes (gray top and bottom layers). The pore structure, less than 40 nanometers in diameter, confines the molecules to a very small area, thus enabling good molecule-metal contacts and limiting defects. Credit: D.
